But… I maintain, when it comes to Putin, the simple explanation is probably the most accurate. Regardless of whatever justifications, even reasonable sounding ones, he makes - I believe Putin just wants to expand the Russian empire, like kings, emperors, and dictators always do. He’s kept himself in power too long, sowed seeds of discord in his rivals too long for this to not be part of his larger plan.
