In my view, both the extreme Democrats and Republicans have gone insane, but in different ways. When I used to follow Fox news, I literally saw Republicans say that AOC and the squad should be killed because they were "like cockroaches" and that liberals shouldn't be able to own guns, just conservatives.
However, I don't think most Republicans hold views like that, just the outliers. That said, many far left Democrats are losing it, becuase they actually *literally* believe "Republicans" want to kill them - and, that belief isn't coming out of nowhere. It's coming out of the things a few extremist Replicans are saying - things that I've personally seen them say on conservative platforms.
The thing is, Republicans will cherry pick the worst of the Democrats, and the Democrats will chery pick the worst of the Republicans. That means, Democrats are reading about how Republicans want to kill them - you can read two Dem leaning articles on it here:
https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/26/politics/marjorie-taylor-greene-democrats-violence/index.html
Now, the Dem response to this "threat" hasn't been great - the Dems attempted to coercively weild control over culture using things like public humilation (which, I think is where people like you and Musk take objection.) I personally disagree with "cancel culture" because it is coercive in nature, and protecting individual rights means not subjecting people to any form of coercion, including public/social media humilation. But, even given that, you have to understand how insane it sounds to most Dems, when people like Musk call them the Democrats the "Party of Hate" when they're reading about how Republicans are literally calling for blood. I maintain that Musk's tweet was highly divisive, and because he's familar with liberal politics from owning a company in CA he should have known better.
If you tell people they are "full of hate" when they think the other side is trying to kill them, they will react strongly because they feel trapped. The far left view of this is, "the Republicans want to kill us, and we are being told we're full of hate for trying to defend ourselves." Of course, this misses many areas where the Democrats are legitimately failing, but poking them in this way will only deepen the divide.
Sorry that was a long explanation, but I get the impression you may not have seen the Democrat side of this and I wanted to explain it. Even if you disagree with their politics, I hope you can see how the larger ecosystem is causing toxic fear to take hold - and that individual Dems are likely not as nutty as you think.
Anyway - I hope you're right about the Twitter takeover, but I'm worried. For me, the test will be if he bans that kid who is tracking his flights; if he does, it implies to me he's not above using the platform for his own personal interests. If not, well, I'll still be worried, but it's a better sign.
