What went wrong with that parade?
Trump can’t even dictator correctly
Seems like people around the world are mocking Trump’s parade for being a bit pathetic. And I gotta be honest, I’m not completely sure what was going on with it myself. Like, I expected to be embarrassed by the parade because it was anti-democratic and authoritarian, but I did assume that the military presentation itself would be impressive.
Here’s an example of the Russians making fun of it (and like honestly, brutal.)
So what happened?
Full disclosure, I am not an expert on military stuff. But, even I know American troops are capable of marching in step with each other, and also they have different fancy uniforms (Class A I think they’re called) they use on special occasions.
There are some examples of all that here, in this video:
This is my guess; on top of some logistical things going wrong (like, not being given enough time to prepare and stuff like that) I would guess the Army didn’t want to present itself as a tool of authoritarianism.
I would imagine, that opting for a more relaxed marching style was an intentional choice from the military to distance itself from authoritarian regimes like China and Russia. Rather, they opted to have the parade be a bit more of a representational impression of “America’s Army Throughout The Years.” I didn’t tune in to it, but it seems they marched in uniforms representing every era of America’s military, which (all things considered) is actually a pretty cool idea, and I think a really good way to handle being put in this situation.
But of course, because Trump is setting himself up to be dictator, it was compared to the military presentations of other dictators. So, it was seen to be lacking because it wasn’t crisp enough, choreographed enough, etc.
And, I don’t mind for a damn second that Trump is humiliated on the world stage — but I do feel for all the military people, who were put in a really shitty situation around this. They were completely set up to fail with no good options, because to comply would be to signify total acquiescence with Trumps’ authoritarian tendencies. However, the decision to take the focus off Trump and put it on the historical perspective of the military seems to have landed them some bad publicity.
Truth be told, I’m happy with the the trade off they made. I’m glad we didn’t have a bunch of SS looking motherfuckers goose stepping around Washington DC. I’m just sorry they were put in such a situation in the first place.
